Brunet Escapes The Wrath Of `Bagle'
Worm
By Maya Salleh
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei's internet seems to have escaped the wrath of
the so-called "Bagle" or "Beagle" worm that hit big countries.
According to sources at BruNet, there
has been no reported cases here, though they are investigating any
occurrences.
Instances of a new computer worm
named 'Bagle' or `Beagle' have been reported in 139 countries; China,
Korea and Australia appeared to be the hardest hit, according to the
washingpost.com.
The 'Bagle’ worm works like other
worms, where it is delivered as a file attachment to an email message
using an unsophisticated subject heading of simply `Hi,' or `test :)’
with message text that consists primarily of random characters, and
with a randomly-named executable as the attached file.
It is believed that if the attachment
were opened, it would give the worm's as yet unidentified sender
control over the victim's computers.
However its surface in the United
States last weekend did not cause administrators many problems in
spite that it did render some damage.
It was assured that it was not a
devastating attack on computer systems unlike previous worms such as 'MSBlast'
and 'SQL Slammer' which were spread late last year which caused very
serious damage to computer systems that took months to remedy.
The washingtonpost.com was also
quoted as saying that some security experts have publicly worried that
`Bagle' was actually just a test version '" and that a more
sophisticated, final version might be on the way.
Meanwhile, the Telecommunications
Department Public Relations Unit, the Chief Technician (Corporate
Communications), Hjh Ismawati Hj. Ismail, announced that the BruNet
technical team is still investigating the matter and so far there has
been no reported case. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
