Village Residents Cry Foul Over
‘Double Standards'
By Rosli Abidin Yahya & Hi Mohd Said
Bandar Seri
Begawan - While many villagers were full of appreciation
towards the proliferation of duty by their village heads or better
known as Ketua Kampung, there
were a few voices in a few villages
that some representatives were not up to the required standard.
Complaints about that some village
heads were spending more time at sea catching fish as well as putting
more time managing their own businesses had always been heard in the
past.
They also alleged that the head was
seldom at his house and he did not have a phone line to communicate
with his villagers.
"We fully believe our head is
practising double standards on new settlers who purchased lands and
built their houses in the village. And because of this, some of us are
thinking of selling our lots to move elsewhere," they said.
However, a village head near the
capital received praises from their villagers.
"Our head even visited our business
establishments regularly asking if we encounter problems. He also
enquired about operating licences from new establishments.
"Once he asked a karaoke lounge to
stop operating before being subjected to raid by enforcement agencies
because the operating license was not ready.
"The owner was thankful and heeded
for the advice. If raided his karaoke system would be confiscated and
he stood to lose thousands of dollars," they said.
