One hundred and sixty underprivileged
students from 13 schools from all four districts now have new
stationery for school, thanks to a contribution from Hong Kong and
Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and the Women Graduates
Association of Brunei Darussalam.
At a ceremony yesterday, the Guest of
Honour Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Paduka Haji Suyoi Bin Haji
Othman handed over the stationery to the students. Also present was
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Sheikh Haji Adnan
Bin Sheikh Mohammad.
Most of the students who received the
stationery were selected based on their background and their good
academic record. Pengiran Hajah Intan, President of the Women
Graduates Association, said that the association was delighted with
HSBC's generous contribution and its long-term support for the
association's project 'Save Our Children'.
She said that members of the
association have their own field of specialty, and they provide
assistance and support in anyway to help the education of students who
are the future asset of the country.
In his speech, Mr Simon William,
Deputy CEO of HSBC, said that HSBC as "the world's local bank, has
always supported the communities in which we live and work". HSBC
recognises the importance of education in preparing young people to
gain necessary skills and knowledge to succeed, and thus the bank is
focusing on education projects, particularly for the underprivileged
students.
