Winner
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Locally grown, sweet oranges are among the abundant
fruits easily obtainable, which has commercial potential, traders here
said.
In Brunei, sweet oranges can be
bought at shopping centres and stalls along the roads at affordable
prices ranging from $1 to $3 per kilo.
Most Bruneians are already prefering
the unique sweet taste of the local oranges to the imported ones.
There are a number of local
entrepreneurs involved in the running of sweet orange orchards in
certain areas in the country.
The fruits are normally sold to
shopping centres or at the orchards to subsidise individual income.
Among the most in demand are the
honey sweet oranges.
Indeed, the local sweet oranges
industry has the potential to be commercialised, said Brunei farmers.
As with every Chinese New Year
celebration a growing amount of local mandarin honey oranges or lokan
is made available at almost all shopping centres in the country.
By looking at the large amount being
imported, it is obvious that the fruit is not favoured by the Chinese
alone.
Its competitive price is the main
factor and it tastes slightly different from local oranges.
Ancient Chinese believed in
exchanging of mandarin honey oranges with relatives and friends during
house visits in the Chinese New Year celebration as a symbol of
sharing prosperity and wealth.
In festivities such as this it is
delightful to see local sweet oranges and mandarin honey oranges are
served symbolising friendship and prosperity among people in this
country, comments a news report in Radio Television Brunei. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
