Government Jobs Get Less So Work
For Companies, Youths Told
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Local jobseekers should not rely solely on the public
sector as a source of employment, as opportunities in this field are
becoming increasingly limited, A top official has pointed out.
What the public needs to realise is
that the private sector also plays an important role in providing jobs
for our locals.
In 2002, there were over 100,591 jobs
in the private sector but only. Locals filled 28% of these jobs.
These statistics were highlighted by
the Director General of Economic Planning and Development, Awang Haji
Kamis Bin Haji Tamin at an introductory briefing for the industrial
and info-communication technology training program yesterday.
The scheme was first announced in
December and the response has been overwhelming with more than three
thousand applicants applying to join the scheme.
Over 1,700 applicants attended the
briefing and this number will eventually be narrowed down as the
applicants will be required to go through a series of interviews.
Also part of the briefing was a
motivational talk, given by Dato Dr Haji Ismail Noor from Malaysia.
The talk was aimed at increasing
self-esteem and confidence, as a majority of jobseekers unemployed for
long periods often feel discouraged and insecure.
Radio Television Brunei (RTB) spoke
to some of the applicants who attended this morning's briefing.
Many of them possessed adequate
qualifications and felt that they should be given a chance.
Some applicants also disagreed with
the perception that local jobseekers are too selective. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
