Thai Jailed For Drunk Driving,
Consuming Drugs

Begawan - The Magistrates’ Court told a Thai man to serve four
months in jail and refrain from driving for three years yesterday when
he pleaded guilty to a charge of driving under the influence of
alcohol and another charge of consuming Methylamphetamine.
Magistrate Lailatul Zubaidah
sentenced the defendant, Mawin Kinaree, to one month’s jail with three
year’s driving disqualification for the first charge of having driven
a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol, and a fine of
$1,500 or three month’s jail in default for the charge of consuming
the Class A controlled drug, Methylamphetamine.
Mawin
failed to pay the fine and was told to serve the default sentence,
which is to run concurrently with the sentence of one month’s
imprisonment and three year’s driving disqualification.
According to the Prosecuting Officer
Nor Hafizah Ahmad, Mawin admitted that he had been driving his car, a
Toyota Kijang, from Lamunin on October 15, last year. It was raining
slightly early that morning at about 6.45 am.
As he arrived in Gadong near the
Jabatan Siasatan Kawalan Lalulintas (Road Traffic Control
Investigation Department), he felt sleepy and hit a post near the
Police Guard post in Gadong.
The defendant did not sustain any
injuries and his vehicle was only moderately damaged, however,
government property, the fence and the post was damaged during the
incident.
The defendant’s blood and urine
sample were taken for testing at the Scientific Service Department
where they confirmed that his blood was found to contain 223.17 mg% of
Ethanol.
Consequently, his urine sample was
tested positive for Methylamphetamine.
The defendant admitted to taking the
drug.
According to the prosecution, the
defendant is a first offender.
