Public advised to take precautionary steps during CNY
By M K Anwar

The Royal Brunei Police, in a press statement, advised members of the public to take precautionary measures especially those who are celebrating the upcoming Chinese New Year.

These precautionary steps are necessary to prevent any criminal elements from ruining their properties during the festivity.

Police advise members of the public to always ensure that the doors and windows are properly locked and secured and to leave some lights on at night, especially when no one is at home.

It is also important to inform neighbours or relatives when one leaves the house, so they could keep a watchful eye on the property.

Jewellery or valuable items should be kept in a safe place.

Additionally, it is wise to check the electrical appliances and gas stoves at home to prevent a fire mishap from occuring.

The public is also advised to keep an eye on their belongings such as money, identity card, credit cards and licenses during festive shopping especially at crowded department stores. The police advised shoppers against carrying too much cash. Car owners must ensure their vehicles are locked before heading to the store.

Members of the public are also advised to stay alert when withdrawing money from an ATM. It is also advisable to withdraw money during the daytime. Should there be a need to withdraw money during the night, steer clear of those in secluded areas and never to do withdraw money alone.

If a person is spotted loitering near an ATM in a suspicious manner, remember the person's face or jot down the registration plate of his car and call the police hotline at 993.
