Cleanup At Sungai Bera A Big Success

Seria – For more than 20 years a river known as Sungai Bera in Seria Town was used as an oil waste dumping ground. Now the river has been restored to its natural state.

The six-hectare basin is located about 20 metres from Sungai Bera.

In 1982, the basin was designated and engineered as a treatment and storage facility.

The Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) company discontinued oil disposal to the basin in 1996, as the company decided to restore its natural state by conducting an environmental cleanup.

After a comprehensive consultation with experts on ways to clean up the area, a development plan project was approved in 1997.

The project was awarded to a consortium in late 1999 rehabilitation and re-vegetation on the site began in mid-2000.

A local company in conjunction with three Canadian companies conducted the project and completed early this year. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
