Brunei’s Anti Drug Drive Continues
With Talk To Schools
Kuala Belait –
The Narcotic Control Bureau in the Belait District has arrested
283 people for drug offences in 2002 and 2003, the department
announced yesterday.
In 2002 alone the Narcotic Control
Bureau recorded 146 arrests in the Belait District of which 130 were
males and 16 females.
The figures also showed 114 people
were locals while 24 were permanent residents and five foreigners.
Last year, the bureau made 137
arrests. From the number, 114 were male and 23 were female 116 of them
were Bruneians and 16 others were permanent residents.
According to statistics, 80 percent
of the arrested people were Malays nearly 10 percent were Chinese and
10 percent were foreigners.
Meanwhile, the Schools Department,
Ministry of Education has taken positive efforts by organising
activities related to misuse of drugs in schools.
Continuous campaigns to provide
useful information to students towards the negative effect of misuse
of drugs, said the department.
Such efforts involved law enforcement
agencies for joint force in disseminating beneficial information to
the students.
Many students expressed their ideas
on the negative effects of drugs abuse, during talks, said the
department.
The most popular type of drugs
usually used is ‘methamphehtamine hydrochloride’ or well known as ‘syabu’.
The offence in trafficking drugs can
carry a maximum penalty of up to 30 years in jail and 15 strokes of
the cane.
Consumption of other types of drugs
in the Asean region is also increasing creating a growing problem.
Among the drugs are ‘Ketamine’, Yaba,
