Brunei Fire Fighters Save Millions
Through Emergency Calls

Begawan - More than $7.1 million worth of properties were
spared by emergency calls last year, Brunei Fire Service Department
figures revealed yesterday.
It comprised commercial building
fires, flames engulfing homes, electricity, cars and gas leaks
involving 222 emergency calls the Fire Service Department received in
these particular cases.
Fire Service Department statistics
show a total of 3,228 emergency calls were recorded last year.
Bush and forest fires recorded the
highest calls with 981.
It was followed by 877 calls to
catch, rescue and hunt for animals and 325 calls about uprooted trees.
In the fire related emergency calls
of buildings and houses involved 28 calls. Fires involved in building
cases loss of property amounted to $1,661,045.
Sixty-five emergency calls of house
cases recorded $1,823,500 worth of loss of property.
According to the Fire Service
Department, the main cause of the fire was individual negligence such
as continuous use of electricity for extended periods especially when
occupants were away from home.
Unsafe electrical wiring and using
electrical appliances, which did not meet the required standards, also
caused fire mishaps.
Un attended open fires, meanwhile,
destroyed thousands of hectares.
Thirty percent of the overall calls
were for forest and bush fires.
The fires have destroyed 1,294
hectares of forest and bush which cost a total loss of $10,000.

equipment from time to time.
The latest is the newly acquired
equipment is the Para motor which is very useful for fire fighters in
monitoring fire, accident and other unfortunate incidents, said a
department spokesman. --
