Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) held a
Chinese New Year calligraphy competition in the school's hall last
Friday morning.
The competition, which was aimed to
improve the students' calligraphy skills and to strengthen relations
between teaching staff and students, saw more than 180 students from
all levels taking part. Surprisingly, there were a number of Malays as
well as other ethic groups that took part.
Before the start of the competition,
the school's principal, Madam Kho wished everyone an advance happy
Chinese New Year. She also said that students should appreciate the
art of Chinese calligraphy as it can calm both the mind and heart.
The competition was officially
launched when two lion dance performers unveiled a banner bearing
words written in Chinese calligraphy. Two calligraphy masters, Mr. Yu
and Mr. Lau were also on hand to personally showcase their talents to
the students.
The competition was divided into five
categories - non-Chinese students (primary and secondary levels),
Chinese students (primary and secondary levels) and capital hand
writing calligraphy.
The names of winners are Siti Nur
Liyana binti Metali (non-Chinese student - primary level), Rasidah
binti Damayanti (non-Chinese student - secondary level), Hii Siew Ping
(Chinese student - primary level), Soh Kiaw Han (Chinese student -
secondary level) and Chu Hu Chiet (capital hand writing calligraphy).
