Sabah Red Tide Triggers Ban On Shellfish Import

Bandar Seri Begawan – A ban has been enforced on the importations of planktivorous fish and molluscan shellfish on the heels of reports that red toxins have contaminated several coastal waters in Sabah.

Banned were the importation of mackerel and sardines and moluscan shellfish such as oysters, cockles and mussels from Sabah.

The Fisheries Department, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources issued the ban after receiving information from the Department of Fisheries in Sabah, indicating that its coastal waters, particularly the Kuala Penyu and Kota Belud areas are contaminated with red tide toxins.

However, as an added precautionary measure, the public is advised to clean all fish thoroughly by completely removing the guts, gills and other internal organs before cooking.

The public is also advised not to eat plantivorous fish and molluscan shellfish such as clams, cockles and mussels of unknown origin.

The Fisheries Department will keep the public informed of further developments. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
