Clogged drain causes flood
By Azlan Othman

Floodwater inside the house.

Occupants of three houses at Simpang 527 in Kg. Belimbing, Subok had a sleepless night on Saturday after the water level reached up to almost three feet high due to an overflowed and clogged drainage system.

The water started to rise at 12.15 midnight on Saturday, the time when she came back after her night shift, said Ms. Ong, who lives with 11 other family members.

The family's preparation for the Chinese New Year next week has to be temporarily halted, she said. They are busy cleaning up the muddy deposits and excess water.

"At one time, the water level rose up to three steps of the staircase. The flood caused my 90-year-old grandparents to be anxious. They are also facing health problems. Such flood case has been going on for years now. We contacted the Public Works Department and the village leader about this matter but we have yet to receive any feedback," she said.

Ms Ong said a construction project is going on behind their house. A bigger drain has been constructed and water flows out to the smaller drain in front of her house.

"Several years ago, our aluminium gate broke down due to the impact of the water pressure," she claimed.

Brunei is currently experiencing a wet season which will last until February.
