Fire Dept Provides Kg Ayer
Residents With Life-Saving Tips
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Following a simple scientific rule could go all the
way towards saving one's life from fire.
Being trapped in thick smoke is among
the causes of death during tire and following a simple rule could
actually save one's life.
A person trapped in thick smoke could
save his life by crawling as there is still fresh air available 60 cm
above the floor as smoke is lighter than air.
We as house occupants should also
take note of the number of steps or distance from, for instance, our
bedroom to the main exit in the event of being trapped in thick smoke.
Using a wet towel to cover our mouths
is also another way to escape from being choked from thick smoke.
These handy tips were outlined by DSO
Norzali Apong, Public Relations Officer at the Fire Services
Department, in a talk that was followed by a demonstration to
extinguish fires for mothers, women and residents of Kg Setia `A' in
Kg Ayer.
The talk was held yesterday at the
Perdana Wangsa Hj Mohammad mosque and organised by the Public
Relations Office and General Education of the Fire Services
Department.
Norzali
said that a big blaze is not uncommon in Kg Ayer. In 1995, six fires
were recorded in Kg Ayer. Seven were reported in 1997 and again six
blazes in 2000.
From 1986 onwards, at least one major
fire would occur almost every year in Kg. Ayer.
