Malay, Chinese Culture Mixed In Southeast Asia

Bandar Seri Begawan – Malay and Chinese culture are very important and interwoven well in Southeast Asia.

Mr. Wei Wei, Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Brunei, stressed this at the launching the Chinese calligraphic competition and exhibition yesterday.

He said that schools, newspapers and Chinese associations are the main factors that help keep up the Chinese customs as part of the local Malay culture.

The competition was organised by the Tiong Hin Superstore in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration.

It is the first time such a competition was held by a private sector in the country.

Around 60 students from all Chung Hwa Primary and Secondary Schools nationwide took part in the competition.

Among them were eight Malay students.

In an interview with Radio Television Brunei (RTB), Dayang Rasidah Damayanti Bte Daniel, one of the Malay students from Chung Hwa Secondary School in Bandar Seri Begawan, said that she had to practise about once or twice a week to master the arts skill and she ccould do it well after three years of learning.

Another student, Md Norazly Zazaly Bin Ralji also from Chung Hwa Secondary School, Bandar Seri Begawan, said he started learning Chinese calligraphy when he was in primary one and took a keen interest in the art after participating in several competitions which he took as a hobby. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
