Malay, Chinese Culture Mixed In
Southeast Asia
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Malay and Chinese culture are very important and
interwoven well in Southeast Asia.
Mr. Wei Wei, Ambassador of the
People's Republic of China to Brunei, stressed this at the launching
the Chinese calligraphic competition and exhibition yesterday.
He said that schools, newspapers and
Chinese associations are the main factors that help keep up the
Chinese customs as part of the local Malay culture.
The competition was organised by the
Tiong Hin Superstore in conjunction with the upcoming Chinese New Year
celebration.
It is the first time such a
competition was held by a private sector in the country.
Around 60 students from all Chung Hwa
Primary and Secondary Schools nationwide took part in the competition.
Among them were eight Malay students.
In an interview with Radio Television
Brunei (RTB), Dayang Rasidah Damayanti Bte Daniel, one of the Malay
students from Chung Hwa Secondary School in Bandar Seri Begawan, said
that she had to practise about once or twice a week to master the arts
skill and she ccould do it well after three years of learning.
Another student, Md Norazly Zazaly
Bin Ralji also from Chung Hwa Secondary School, Bandar Seri Begawan,
said he started learning Chinese calligraphy when he was in primary
one and took a keen interest in the art after participating in several
