Women Vow To Raise Quality Of Life
At ACWW Meet
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The 7th Area Conference of the Associated Country
Women of the World (ACWW) for Southeast Asia and Far East drew to a
close yesterday with much vigor and enthusiasm to revitalize the
quality of life of women.
For the past week, delegates from
five countries had been discussing issues of concern to the women in
their area.
The issues discussed included
improving the quality of life of women in rural areas which remained a
top priority.
In many parts of Southeast Asia and
the Far East, agriculture plays an integral role in the economy of a
country.
Much of the agricultural activity
takes place in rural areas with women as the main labour force.
ACWW
carries out programmes that are involved in agricultural activity and
provides women with appropriate knowledge to make them more
productive.
Contrary to the popular belief that
it is men who are normally the main breadwinners, in the Philippines
it seems women are much more involved in agriculture than men.
Women groups in Indonesia, on the
other hand, focus more on providing adequate infrastructure rather
than knowledge and skills.
In Indonesia, the situation is not
much different from that in the Philippines.
Women are far more involved in
farming.
What is even more interesting is that
in some areas, there are more women in the marketplace than men.
Hilda Stewert, ACWW World President,
reaffirmed ACWW's commitment towards improving the quality of life of
women in rural areas.
In some parts of the world, women
have no access to land ownership and are even considered as part of
the property.
The ACWW itself aims at raising the
standards of living of rural women and their families through
education, training and community development projects.
The ACWW hopes that the training that
these women receive in these workshops can then be passed along to
other women at the grassroots level. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
