Brunei’s Medicinal Plants
Bandar Seri Begawan –
Herbal
entrepreneurs and pioneers in Brunei are developing the potential
aspects of the country’s rich and arable plants containing natural
medication value.
Dato
Haji Idris, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and
Primary Resources, disclosed this while officiating at the traditional
herbs botanical garden at the Luahan Agriculture Development area in
Jerudong yesterday.
The Permanent Secretary said the
ministry welcomed the local businesses existence in this industry in
contributing and in supporting the nation's vision towards
diversification of its economic resources.
At the ceremony, Dato Haji Idris also
planted the 'phaleria papuana', a life-long antidote.
The traditional herbs botanical
garden, which has an area of four hectares, was developed by the Saudy
Enterprise Company for the traditional herbal industry.
The company is producing medicines
from traditional herb origins for health and beauty purposes.
More than 30 species of herbs have
been collected at the garden.
The establishment of this garden is
meant for collecting, propagating and researching of local herbs
species and eventually processing them into medicines for various
diseases.
A seminar on medical plants was also
held for the first group exploring on the knowledge about using herbal
medicines in health and treatments for elder people.
The garden will also be used as a
place of reference for students as well as local and foreign graduates
in research programmes towards the prevention of various diseases.
According to the owner of the
company, so far the firm has received assistance in herbal plants from
Jordan, Indonesia and Malaysia.
The company will also be receiving an
