Livestock For Sacrifice Arrive
By Maya SaIIeh
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Livestock for Hari Raya Aidiladha, also known as the
`Feast of Sacrifice', arrived yesterday at the Muara Port.
Some 417 goats, 293 buffaloes and 768
bulls and steers, were delivered to Mulaut Abbatoir by the Halaqah
Company in Australia.
All the livestock are placed at the
Mulaut Abattoir for weighing in preparation for the allocation of
reservations made by the public.
The reservations were opened since
January 5.
The price of a live cow is $3.95 per
kilogramme and $4.10 per kilogramme for buffaloes. Goats are priced at
$220 per head.
The Marketing Manager of Mulaut
Abattoir, Awang Yusran Haji Abdullah, assured the public who have made
their reservations that the supply could be met.
The prices of live cows and buffaloes
have increased by 30% as compared to last year due to the change in
the exchange rate of Brunei dollars to Australian dollars.
Awang
Yusran estimated the minimum cost of either a live cow or buffalo at
$1,300.
He also advised the public that
amidst the fears of the recurrence of "mad cow" disease, all livestock
supplied by the abattoir have undergone screening processes by the
Agricultural Department and the Religious Affairs Department.
This is to ensure that the livestock
is not only free from "mad cow" disease but from other ailments as
well.
He also added that the abattoir only
supplies livestock that meets its high standards in terms of health
and quality as well as meeting the standards set by the Religious
Affairs Department. --
