Brunei’s Shrimp Export May Lead To
Centre Of Excellence
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Exporting rostris shrimp is eyed to be a means for
Brunei to realise its vision to become a centre of excellence.
Awang
Haji Mohd Usop Bin Haji Abdul Razak Sidi, manager of the Semaun Prim
Sendirian Berhad, made this observation.
He said the exporting of the rostris
shrimp needs to go through various processes to ensure its survival
rate and quality when it reaches its destination, particularly for a
long journey flight.
The first export trial to Fiji in
December last year with 300,000 shrimps was a success.
Apart from the quality, the packaging
and delivery will determine the survival rate of the shrimp.
For the, trial delivery, 95 per cent
of survival rate was recorded during the 24-hour journey.
Then on January 8, 2004, 50,000
shrimps were exported to Taipei and recorded another success of 100
per cent survival rate.
With the success, the Gulf Seafood
Fiji limited was confident with the quality of shrimps produced in
Brunei and made another booking for 300,000 pieces for today's
delivery.
With the capability too, Brunei’s
rostris will become one of the country's main export commodities apart
from the market size shrimps, which have increased its export value
from zero point $705 million in 2000 to 1.47 million dollars in 2002
for the export markets such as the United States, Japan and others.
The success of the rostris shrimp
production since 2000 is followed by the commercial verification of
the rostris shrimp product at the Meragang Hatchery Centre.
With the success, the technology
transfer and thorough coordination of the centre were taken over by
the Seiwa Corporation Sendirian Berhad, a subsidiary of the Semaun
Holdings Sendirian Berhad.
Now the capacity of the shrimp
production has reached up to 10 million a month. However, the current
demand only needs five to six million.
Every month, an opportunity to
explore the export market is open wide as soon as the local demand is
fulfilled. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
