Yayasan taking steps to clean
unsafe stairway
By Hj Minor Absah

Worker cleaning the algae that makes the jetty slippery.
Concerned with the accident-prone
stairway that was covered with algae, the Yayasan Committee began work
yesterday to clean steps at the jetty in front of its building. The
steps will be cleared thrice a week.
This stairway, used by public members
as well as foreign visitors for going to and from Kampong Ayer, was
covered with algae.
Managing Director of Yayasan, Dato
Paduka Awg Hj Abdul Ghani Hj Abdul Rahim, said that they took the
initiative to not only clean the area but also replace anything that
has been damaged or eroded by the river despite the fact that it is
not within their authority.
The stairway is dangerous, especially
during low tides when the steps' slippery surface could lead to
accidents, particularly the elderly while boarding and leaving boats,
he added.
He denied that Yayasan will be taking
over the old immigration and customs control post wharf as stated in
the media but welcomed the idea that it be used as a tourist
attraction.
