Massive Booze Haul In
Sultanate
By Azlan Othman & Hj Minor Absah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In what is believed to be a biggest booze haul in
recent times, Brunei’s enforcement officers succeeded in confiscating
a large quantity of beer and liquor found to be stored at the karaoke
lounge of a building in Mentiri on Sunday night.
The Preventive Unit of the Royal
Brunei Customs and Excise Department confiscated 773 cans (30 cartons)
of Tiger beer, 147 bottles of Guinness Stout and 90 bottles of Vodka
Cruisher and several other cans of beer at the lounge.
More than 10 officers of the
Preventive Unit conducted surveillance on the premises for four hours
following a tip-off from the public.
Around 11.48 pm, the officers made
the move and raided the place (Block A, Unit 9) though the door of the
lounge was tightly guarded to ensure that no uninvited guests entered
the lounge.
During the raid, the patrons were
seen enjoying their drinks. The officers later inspected the premises
and detained a 27 year-old local Chinese, who was also the manager of
the karaoke lounge.
The manager, who refused to cooperate
with the Preventive Unit personnel at the outset, later revealed that
more beer and alcoholic drinks were hidden at the first floor of the
building.
According to the public, the illicit
activity was being carried out at the place for quite sometime.
