More Power To Women Worldwide
Conference Urged
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Empowering women to take on leadership roles and
become involved in decision making has very deep significance for
women in both emerging and developed countries.
Hilda Stewart, President, Associated
Country Women of the World (ACWW), pointed this out, at the opening of
the 7th Area Conference of the ACWW for Southeast Asia and Far East
held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in the Brunei
capital yesterday.
The ACWW holds regional training
workshops on leadership skills and organisational management for its
members, in the hope that the knowledge gained from these workshops
will be passed on to women at the grassroots level.
HIV/AIDS continues to be an issue of
great concern and not just to women specifically.
There are as many as 13 million
children worldwide infected with the disease.
The poverty of regions heavily
affected by AIDS/HIV worsens the situation even further.
Despite the robust growth of the
world economy in the 21st century, problems such as poverty and world
hunger still persist.
The ACWW President also touched on
the difficulties facing farmers.
Cheaper food for consumers means
lower prices for the primary producer, who at the same time is facing
ever increasing input costs.
Women’s organisations at all levels
have a responsibility to highlight these issues even further, and to
make aware how poverty and Aids can inhibit all development efforts,
whether they are government-led or NGO-led. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
