Brunei Vows To Back Global War
Against Trans-National Crimes
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei has vowed continuous support towards regional
and international efforts against terrorism.
It will do so through international
bodies like the Asean Regional Forum (ARF), the Asia Pacific Economic
Cooperation (APEC), the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and the United
Nations in the fight.
This was the continuing pledge Brunei
has made at the end of the Fourth Asean Ministerial Meeting on
Trans-national Crime in Bangkok recently.
Dato
Haji Dani, Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office,
highlighted that Brunei had agreed to participate in two international
resolutions that were agreed upon at the Bangkok meeting, namely, the
agreement on information exchange and establishment of communication
procedures and the international convention for the suppression of the
financing of terrorism.
At the same time, a national
committee on trans-national crime was also set up to coordinate this
operation.
The Permanent Secretary pointed out
that Asean and its plus three members, China, Japan and South Korea,
all agreed to strengthen their cooperation to counter eight categories
of trans-national crimes such as terrorism, drugs, smuggling, human
trafficking, especially women and children, piracy, arms smuggling,
money laundering, trans-national financial crimes and cyber crimes.
He added that Asean was also well on
the way towards establishing the Asean security community that had
been agreed upon during the 9th Asean Summit in Bali last October
