Checks To Keep Brunei’s Fishermen

Begawan – More than 1,000 fishermen have registered with the
fisheries department. Many are actively involved in fishing.
In ensuring all the fishermen abide
by all the acts and regulations of the Fisheries Department, the
department and other enforcement agencies conducted an operation early
yesterday morning.
The first for this year's operation
it was codenamed "Operasi Kembura".
The operation was led by the
Fisheries Department involving the Royal Brunei Police Force, Internal
Security Department, Labour Department and the Immigration Department.
The operation, which commenced at 6
am, was concentrated at the docking bay of Pengkalan Sibabau.
During the two-hour operation, the
enforcement agencies found that all the fishermen adhered to and
obeyed by all the regulations.
A compound of $500 will be imposed
for the first offence and a fine of $2,500 and one year imprisonment
for the next offence.
The operation was aimed as a reminder
apart from instilling awareness among the fishermen on the danger of
carrying out fishing activities especially near the oil platform and
installation areas.
It was also focused at ensuring the
concerned firms and companies to obey the acts and labour and
