Madrid lead CNN/World Soccer poll
London -
Spanish champions Real Madrid held onto the number one spot on the
first CNN/ World Soccer Top 10 of 2004.
Madrid launched the year with a 1-0
win at Murcia to maintain their two-point lead at the top of the Liga
and then drew 1-1 with second division side Eibar in the first leg of
their King's Cup third round tie.
European champions AC Milan climbed
one place to No. 2 following their 2-1 win over Serie A leaders Roma
on Tuesday.
Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko
scored both the goals as Milan cut Roma's lead to three points, and
the Rossoneri still have a game in hand.
English champions Manchester United
climbed one place to third after securing a 2-1 win over Bolton in the
Premier League on Wednesday, maintaining their three-point lead over
Arsenal, who hold sixth place on this week's poll.
Paul Scholes, who scored once against
Bolton, scored both goals at the weekend as United beat Aston Villa
2-1 in the FA Cup third round.
Italian champions Juventus jumped two
places to No. 4 following their 1-0 win over Perugia which kept the
Turin giants level on points in Serie A with Milan.
Boca Juniors, the Argentine and
Intercontinental champions, slip three places to fifth.
