National Drive Towards Excellent Tourism
By Achong Tanjong & Azian Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Tourism Division of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources has been invited for the first time this year to participate at the Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meeting Expo (AIME) in Melbourne and the Incentives & Meetings Expo (IMEX) in Frankfurt, Germany.

The meetings will be held in February and May respectively as listed in the Brunei Tourism Calendar 2004.

This is a golden opportunity for Brunei Tourism to promote the Sultanate as an "Incentives and Meeting" destination to the world. The opportunity will act as a tool to showcase Brunei's potential because it has all the modem facilities to offer such as the Empire Hotel and Country Club, International Convention Centre and the Jerudong Park & Playground.

In addition, this year is going to be a much better year in terms of efforts to promote Brunei into the overseas market in which Brunei Tourism is expected to attend 16 "International Travel and Tourism Trade" shows overseas compared to only 13 last year.

This was stated by the Head of Brunei Tourism Unit, Hi Mohd Tali during the recent Press Conference.

Meanwhile, to promote the Tourism drive locally, several new programmes and activities have been lined up, focusing more on adventure and Eco-tourism activities.

Hj Mohd Tali said that the Temburong District is one of the Sultanate's havens for Eco-tourism related activities following the successful staging of the Bukit Patoi Challenge held in the previous year, Such events not only attract the locals but also foreign participants.

Another event in the pipeline that is expected to attract foreign participants is the "Le Tour De Brunei" which involves cycling around the country, and the "Brunei Bay Regatta" sailing challenge. The participants are expected to be from Hong Kong, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

For the first time, Brunei will hold the PGA Golf tournament this year, where several top international golfers are expected to tee-off on Brunei greens.

This is also part of Brunei Tourism's continuous efforts and commitment in line with its mission to promote Brunei as a unique tourist destination and a Gateway to Tourism Excellence in South East Asia.

Brunei Tourism is also working closely with Sabah, Sarawak and Lahuan to provide the Borneo Packages promoting Borneo as an adventure, Ecotourism and cultural destination to the world. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
