Handycam Helps Nail Abusive Maid
By Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - The suspecting parents of a 10-month-old infant used a handycam to crack the mystery of cuts and bruises that suddenly appeared on their baby’s face.

The camera captured images of the amah hitting the infant’s head and face, which was used as evidence to nail her.

The Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate’s Court sentenced the 20-year-old Indonesian maid, Nanik Sulistyowati, to two years’ imprisonment for her inhumane action in slapping the infant repeatedly on his head and face after the toddler refused to eat and stop crying.

The maid was dubbed by the Senior Magistrate as a dangerous woman, adding that she is not fit to be an amah.

“You had abused the trust given by your employer to take care of their baby. You slapped the defenceless baby because he did not want to eat and stop crying. That is not the right way.

“You also make your fellow countrymen who work in this country ashamed of what you have done,” said Hj Abdullah Soefri DSP Hj Abidin.

When the infant’s mother came back from work she discovered cuts and bruises on her son, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Dk Hana Molina.

When the mother asked the defendant about the injuries, the maid said the baby had hit himself on the table, said the prosecutor.

But the baby’s injuries made the father and mother to become suspicious. A day later, they set up a handycam on top of the television in the living room to record and see if the defendant had anything to do with their little son’s injuries.

The next day, when they viewed the handycam, they saw the defendant repeatedly hitting the infant’s head and face with her hand while she was attempting to feed him, the prosecutor said. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
