It Is War Against Garbage
Mountains For RTB
Bandar Seri
Begawan – State owned Radio Television Brunei (RTB) has gone to
war against the country’s ‘garbage mountains.’
In its broadcast last night it has
attacked the public for not being civic conscious and commented on the
lack of garbage bins and the absence of an efficient waste disposal
system in many areas of the capital.
The issue of indiscriminate dumping
of garbage is not new, it stated.
However, it is of the concern from
the various high authorities in the country.
The problem is not only the
responsibility of a society in Brunei but also in the world as a
whole.
It's the responsibility of every
individual to ensure that the environment always remains clean and
healthy.
RTB
crews took a glimpse at a real situation of waste disposal created by
irresponsible people.
One place identified, as improper
dumping area was located at the Lambak Kanan National Resettlement
Scheme.
It is more regretted when the
atmosphere is being polluted with obnoxious smell.
Such irresponsible attitude as shown
and reflected through the incident will not only cause pollution to
the environment but also can be a source of spreading diseases.
One reason why such attitude exists
is because of improper disposal of garbage.
It is further regretted that the
location created by irresponsible members of the public is nearby the
mosques in the kampong area.
Such attitude remains a national
issue that requires special attention- from all levels of community.
Kampong Ayer was also not spared from
problem of littering.
It is quite a normal scene to see
domestic rubbish floating along the river as a result of
indiscriminate dumping of garbage.
In helping to overcome this problem
is the provision of rubbish bins for the use of both the public and
visitors.
However, some people have complained
of improper location of rubbish bins.
At the same time, the public are also
advised to make proper use of the bins.
There are efforts now to get rid of
Kampong Ayer of indiscriminate disposal of garbage.
These include the collection of
rubbish from Kampong Ayer household.
However, garbage left unattended
along the road are an eyesore. The absence of proper rubbish
collection service is compounding this growing menace.
His Majesty's government, in its
effort has allocated more than 12-hectare of site for the rubbish
dumping area in Kampong Sungai Akar.
Remedial steps taken by authorities
have managed to minimise, the problem.
Indiscriminate dumping of waste of
garbage have become an ongoing problems in the country despite efforts
by various parties including RTB in highlighting the matter.
However, the awareness among the
public on the seriousness of the problem seems to be lacking with more
illegal dumping site sprouting up in the country in many locations.
