Brunei’s Battle Against Booze
Smugglers Gets Serious
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei is to intensify war against smuggling.
The main items spirited across the
border from neighbouring Sarawak include alcohol, cigarettes and
chicken parts.
However the No 1 problem remain beer
and other alcohol and other stronger drinks.
Drug smuggling is also problem which
comes from the Malaysian island of Labuan.
It is illegal to sell alcohol in
Brunei, which is a staunch Islamic state. The state also frowns on
youths getting drunk and behaving in a disorderly fashion.
An official statement yesterday
pointed out that in their efforts to eradicate the smuggling of
contraband goods into the country, the royal Brunei police force with
other law enforcement agencies continued to carry out their operations
in inspecting several places in the country.
Personnel of the Royal Brunei Police
from the Limau Manis Police Station and officials from the Religious
Department carried out an operation codenamed "Operasi Kedengaran
Satu" at the Kuala Lurah Control Post on Saturday night.
Four police personnel and 11 officers
from the Religious Department were involved in the two-hour operation,
which began at 8pm.
The inspection aimed at preventing
members of the public whether they are locals or foreigners to bring
contraband goods into the country.
However, there was no arrest recorded
in the operation. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
