Needy Kids Get Textbooks From
Businessman
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Ten needy children, including orphans, of various
ages at Kampong Lambak Kanan had a reason to smile yesterday as they
received free school books in time for the new school year.
The books were donated by Awg Ismail
bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Hj.Othman, a businessman who has in the past
helped some orphans to get such textbooks.
He is always considering ways to help
the less fortunate.
"With just enough money, every year
my wife and I have been able to donate school books to children so
their mothers don't have to worry about buying them the new books," he
said.
He added, "It is our duty to help
other citizens when we can."
The founder and GM of Rakan Tiga
Media has a habit of helping the needy and special needs children,
whether through his own pocket or his business activities.
On one occasion he had arranged a
free trip for special needs children, even some hospital patients, to
visit a reptile and fish exhibition organised by Rakan Tiga Media.
For the orphans, the free books are
certainly a nice gesture from a caring citizen, who wants to help in
easing the financial burden which their mothers have to shoulder
without the support of a husband.
"It is difficult for a mother to
provide educational needs fully like buying books and stationery for
all her children if she is only earning around $500, especially the
ones (mothers) that have a large family," he said.
Major Hj Mohammad Jair bin Hj Abdul
Wahab, the village head, was given the honour to hand over the books
to the children at his house in Kampong Lambak Kanan.
Through the companies he leads, Rakan
Tiga Media and IPHO Sejati Remittance Company (Cinema Networks), he
has also been able to offer part-time employment to students,
especially during school breaks.
During the ceremony to present the
books, Awg Ismail told the mothers that he is willing to offer the
children part-time jobs during school holidays.
"Taking a part-time job during the
school break is not only a way to get extra cash but it is becoming
more important as a way to build a good character, especially learning
to be independent," he told the children.
