Brunei Halts Importation Of US
Processed Beef Products
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei has temporarily suspended the importation of
beef products from the United States of America.
The ban was enforced with immediate
effect following statements from the U.S. government that a cow in one
of its farms had been tested positive for the mad cow disease.
As a precautionary measure, the
Ministry of Health has imposed an additional condition to anyone who
wishes to import any beef products into this country.
Importers must provide initial
confirmation that the beef exporting and producing country is free
from the mad cow disease for six years before the date of exportation
and confirmed by relevant authorities in the exporting countries.
The temporary ban applies to
processed beef products, including sausages, canned soups, extract
beef and other canned beef products produced by the country.
All permits should be issued and
approved by the authorising agencies before the ban on imported beef
is automatically cancelled.
The Mad Cow disease also known as
'Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy' attacks the nervous system of cow.
The disease can be infected by human
who consumes the exposed beef or its nerve cells even though the risks
of contracting the disease are very low. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
