Easier Asean travel in 2005 - without visas

By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Easy travel in the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member countries is in sight if the words of the Philippines Tourism Secretary are to be implemented.

Mr Richard Gordon told the local newspapers that he hopes to see a more liberal visa requirement within Asean.

At present, tourists from Brunei Darussalam staying for a certain period do not need visas to enter Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand.

Gordon said the visa liberalisation programme would allow tourists holding a visa from one Asean country to enter another member country without getting a new visa.

This would greatly improve tourism in Southeast Asia including Brunei Darussalam once the visa liberalisation programme takes effect in 2005.

He said a liberal visa requirement would encourage tourists to go around Southeast Asia without having to worry about applying for additional travel documents.
