A one-day workshop on issues related to the World Trade
Organisation (WTO), organised by International Relations &
Trade Development Division of the Ministry of Industry &
Primary Resources (MIPR), was held yesterday at the MIPR
Building.
Director General of the
division, Mr Lim Jock Hoi, officiated yesterday's workshop which
was attended by officials from various government agencies
responsible for trade-related matters as well as representatives
from various business associations.
Mr Lim Jock Hoi, in his opening
remarks, briefly touched on the need to increase a deeper
understanding of WTO issues in ensuring an active participation
by the Sultanate. He spoke on the need to increase the
efficiency of inter-governmental coordination in facilitating
issues relating to international trade and also on the
importance of a more active participation by private sectors in
providing input towards the policy-formulation exercises.
Part of MIPR outreach
programmes are conducted to raise awareness and understanding of
issues relating to international trade and investment amongst
both the public and private sectors alike and as part of MIPR
preparations for the WTO 5th Ministerial Meeting which is due to
be held later this year in Cancun, Mexico.
Conducting the workshop were
officers from the International Relations & Trade
Development Division and Ms Lisa Filipetto, Assistant Secretary
of Services and Intellectual Property Branch within the
Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), flown
in specially for the workshop.
MIPR hopes to be able to
organise more activities of such not only for government
officials but also as a forum for providing members of the
public; business communities and consumer associations to voice
out any questions, views and other concerns they have and
members of the public are also encouraged to instigate contact
with MIPR for assistance in organising such seminars.
