Time Goes By
By Liza Mohd
Kuala Belait -
A wife decided to leave the past behind, when she forgave her husband
at the Kuala Belait courts for abusing her two years ago.
Her husband, Azman bin Abd Latif, 31,
was discharged for allegedly assaulting his wife, Azalina binte
Sukarman, 30, sometime in July 2001 at their home in Kg Jabang, Seria.
Jointly charged was her husband's
former brother-in-law, Jofrey bin Junaidi, 38, who is currently
serving jail for a drug offence.
The court heard that Azman had
punched, slapped and kicked her, when she questioned his whereabouts
that day. His brother-in-law, Jofrey who happened to live next door,
heard noises and decided to intervene and assaulted her in the same
manner.
She compounded the case this time and
spared both defendants of a maximum jail term of 3 years and whipping.
Though they were officially off the hook, the magistrate delivered a
stern warning yesterday over their conduct.
However, the first defendant Azman
could not escape charges of drug taking laid against him, after he was
tested positive for syabu and codeine to which he instantly pleaded
guilty yesterday.
Although a first offender, Magistrate
Dk Masni binte Pg Hj Bahar imposed a hefty fine of $2,900 on two
counts of drug consumption.
Meanwhile Jofrey, who was also
charged with consuming syabu, claimed trial. According to police
records, Jofrey had two previous convictions for drug related
offences.
The case was brought to the Kuala
Belait courts yesterday by Police Prosecutor Probationary Inspector
Hayati binte Kassim.
