Seven Digits To Better Phone
System, Says Director
Bandar Seri
Begawan - As from March 22, Brunei will introduce the Seven
Digit National Telephone Numbering Scheme.
The scheme aims in making the
Info-communications market more competitive in upgrading the
effectiveness and the country's current telephone system.
The Telecom Director Awang Buntar
said the 7-digit scheme is more flexible as to provide networks for
new services in the era of info-communication and telecommunication
such as number portability and universal numbering.
The new scheme will involve all
customers using normal telephone and mobile phones, pagers and
facsimile.
The replacement of the telephone
number is easier in the new scheme.
Callers only need to add a digit from
the existing six-digits without dialling the area code numbers.
For Brunei-Muara clients have to
press number 2 before making any calls, 4 for Tutong District, 3 for
Belait District, 5 for Temburong and 8 for mobile phones.
However, the scheme will not involve
numbers for the emergency services such as the ambulance, police and
fire services.
Other numbers, which will not be
affected is the international code access, 3-digit numbers such as
water services, electrical services customer services centre, DST
Care, national free toll number, home country direct services and
BruNet access number.
