His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam
Monday evening attended a state banquet hosted by Philippine
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and First Gentleman Attorney
Jose Miguel Arroyo at the Malacanang Palace.
His Majesty delivered a "titah"
which highlighted the excellent government-to-government
relations in various fields, which were evident among others in
the commercial, industrial and professional fields. His Majesty
expressed appreciation for the contribution of the many
Philippine nationals who live and work in Brunei.
His Majesty highlighted the
state of the region's economies that have been struggling to
recover for the last five years, a situation which is affecting
the security of the region. These, according to His Majesty, are
deep-seated threats to the livelihood of every family and
community which both countries represent. These new challenges
must not divide the people but should send a simple, clear and
confident message expressed through tolerance, decency and
goodwill, His Majesty added.
His Majesty emphasised the
importance of Asean and noted that member economies are growing
increasingly interdependent. His Majesty stated that both
countries' security needs are requiring more and more
sensitivity and consultation and added that transnational
criminals and the agents of terror are becoming increasingly
globalised. As these gather pace, His Majesty said, Southeast
Asia needed each other more.
His Majesty concluded by saying
that bilaterally, the strength gained from working together as
neighbours, friends and partners have always characterised
relations between the two countries. His Majesty thanked
President Arroyo for the privilege of renewing the visit to the
Philippines and wished all the people of the Philippines peace,
happiness and prosperity.
Yesterday, His Majesty went to
Baguio City to visit the Philippine Military Academy to tour the
facilities and join the cadets at a luncheon. His Majesty
delivered a speech at the luncheon.
