KUALA BELAIT - Around 200
foreign workers were inspected under the "Operasi Benteras
111" which was carried out by the Enforcement Section of
the Kuala Belait Immigration Department, Monday night.
This was the first time the
operation was carried out this year, which involved an
examination of 5 houses in the Jln Jaya Negara, Jln Kerma Negara
and Jln Mumong Bypass area. The operation was carried out from
10pm until 12.30am.
Following the inspections, a
Thai national was detained because of failure to produce any
travelling documents. He was eventually brought to court and
sentenced to jail for three months, for overstaying his stay in
the country.
Upon examining the man
involved, he at first claimed that he came from Kuala Belait to
meet his friend. He later claimed that his passport had been
kept by his agent and admitted that he had been in the country
for 2 years but had never made a temporary identification card.
A Filipino woman who had
entered the country under a social visit pass was among the few
who were detained after being found in a room which was occupied
by 4 male Filipinos. A Filipino man who was also there at that
time was also put under investigation.
However it was later found that
they did not break any of the immigration rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, the Immigration
officials reminded employers to provide all their foreign
employees with copies of their important documents while they
are working in the country.
The operation was held to catch
any foreigners in violation of the rules and regulations set out
by the Immigration Department, such as running away from their
employers, staying in the country illegally, and any other
related incidents.
