Topics such as "Achieving
IR Empowerment, IT: a New Dimension, Digital Empowerment and
Challenges, Effective Resources Collaboration, Knowledge's
Heritage and Achieving Excellence" are among the topics
that will benefit participants during the 12th Congress of
Southeast Asian Librarians (CONSAL).
Themed "Information
Resources Empowerment: Enhancing Knowledge Heritage," the
event is scheduled to be held at the International Convention
Centre(ICC) in Berakas from May 4 - 8. It is organised by the
Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, with the cooperation of the Brunei
Darussalam Library Association, and is supported by the Ministry
of Culture, Youth & Sports and CONSAL Secretariat,
Singapore.
The five-day Congress is
expected to be participated by roughly 600 foreign participants,
including those from the host country, as well as 25 lecturers
from as far as UK, USA, Japan, New Zealand, India, Korea, China
and Asean countries.
Apart from the conference,
there will also be a two-and-a-half day pre-conference on
Metadata, Workshop and Reengineering the professional mind on
May 4. Places are limited to 50 persons per workshop on a
first-come-first serve basis.
Other activities include the
Brunei Darussalam Book Fair 2003, organised by Dewan Bahasa dan
Pustaka, that will be held at the ICC from May 4 to 13. The
CONSAL Regional Digitisation Projects will also be displayed.
CONSAL was established in
Singapore in 1970 in response to a growing sense of Southeast
Asian identity among librarians and information professional,
fostered particularly by the formation of the Association of
Southeast Asian Nations.
The membership comprises the
National Libraries and the Library Associations of the ten ASEAN
countries. Each member country in rotation is given the honour
to host the Congress.
