By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 30-year-old Thai national is to serve 3 months behind bars in Jerudong Prison when he pleaded guilty yesterday before Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri to remaining unlawfully in Brunei.

Wirat Saengjan first came to Brunei to work in the construction field with Say Koo (Liew) Sdn Bhd last year.

Wirat went to the Immigrations Enforcement Division on January 25, 2003 and produced his passport to one of the officers who found that his employment pass had expired on May 18, 2002.

An investigation was carried out and Wirat admitted in his statement that he was a runaway worker since November 2001 and hadn't worked with his rightful employer since then.

According to Immigrations Prosecuting Officer Reduan Hj Adnan, Wirat had remained unlawfully in Brunei Darussalam from May 18, 2002 until January 25, 2003 totalling up to 253 days. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
