A senior government officer called for efforts to introduce performing arts to the younger generation who are indulging in the era of technological advancement such as the widely used Internet.

Dato Paduka Hj Dani bin Hj Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youths and Sports said the younger generation is more at ease with interactions through a variety of IT innovations than with people in real life.

The Permanent Secretary was delivering a keynote address at the launching of discussion workshop, Apresiasi Drama (Drama Appreciation) held at the Balai Sarmayuda, Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), Berakas last Saturday.

The launching, organised by the Affiliation of Drama, Entertainment and Creative Artists (GAPHAR) in joint-cooperation with DBP, was also attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, DBP's acting director, Hj Abdul Hakim Hj Mohd Yassin, officers of DBP and Radio Television Brunei, GAPHAR's members, as well as drama and literary activists.

"Quality productions in line with contemporary taste, aspiration and value will attract a greater audience and is an effective tool to channel messages, which is vital towards counteracting negative influences.

"Productions that bring up a variety of issues - social, economy and culture - can be educational to youths," he said.

He urged drama activists and producers to be sensitive to national issues and agendas, and be more proactive as well as quick in translating such issues and agendas into quality productions.

"Such initiatives are vital in cultivating enthusiasms towards nation building and development.

"Drama productions should carry various themes such as patriotism, corporatism amongst the younger generation and awareness towards social problems that are threatening the national stability.

"By encouraging youths to participate in performing arts, we can ensure the survival and longevity of our culture and arts," he said.

The president of GAPHAR, Pg Hj Abu Bakar bin Pg DP Hj Mohamad also delivered an opening address.

The event culminated with a talk by a Universiti Brunei Darussalam lecturer, Mohd Zefri Ariff bin Mohd Zain Ariff on the development of drama in Brunei Darussalam.

A question-and-answer session was also conducted, chaired by Pg Hj Mohd Don bin Pg Hj Besar, GAPHAR's adviser, who is also a veteran actor.
