Begawan - The overall customs revenue has increased by 12.6 per
cent. A total of $104 million was recorded last year compared to $92
million in 2001, Customs Annual statistics showed.
The main contribution to the revenue
was taxes on import vehicles even the taxes for vehicles had been
decreased from 40 to 200 per cent to 20 per cent in November 2001.
The revenue from vehicles tax in 2002
total $58 million for 12,628 imported vehicles, which included used
cars.
Besides collecting Brunei's revenue
the Royal Customs and Excise Department also plays an important role
to curb smuggling and checking on undeclared goods by strictly manning
the enforcement section control posts.
Last year a total of 121 cases were
reported under the Customs Act.
The cases include smuggling of
illegal goods such as alcoholic drinks, cigarettes, chicken, meat, tax
offence fines, as well as checking on undeclared goods.
The confiscated goods were estimated
at around $141,497 reported the Enforcement Section.
