Fine This Year
By Malai FadleyRizal
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A smuggler was fined $15,000 in default eight months
jail by Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri yesterday, so far being
the biggest fine imposed upon a Customs offender this year.
Teo Hock Chuan, 51, manager of KSL
Sdn Bhd, was caught changing the plastic packaging of chicken parts,
which he had changed into plastic bags of local-produced chickens to
prevent them from being caught.
Statement of facts revealed that 870
kilogrammes of chicken wings and 307 kilogrammes of boneless chicken
were found in three cold storage containers at the company's premises
at No.471, Spg 473 in Kg Kapok, Muara by Customs officers and members
of the Board For Issuing Halal Import, who were acting upon public tip
off on July 25, 2002.
According to The Royal Customs and
Excise Prosecuting Officer, ASC Hj Jamil Hj Tuah, the original
packages were changed into ones that bore the names 'Yana' and 'SHDAA'
on the contraband.
Teo said in his statement to Customs
Officers that he got his supply from a Chinese man once every week. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
