The English for Business and
Technology 2003 Conference organised by Institute Technology
Brunei with HSBC as the main sponsor concluded on Wednesday
night, according to a press release from ITB.
To celebrate the conference's
success, the organiser hosted a closing dinner at the Orchid
Garden Hotel. The Chief Guest was the Special Duties Officer at
the Ministry of Education, Dr Hj Abdul Latif bin Hj Ibrahim.
Other special guests were Mr Marcus Hurry, CEO of the Hongkong
and Shanghai Bank, the main sponsor of E4BT2003 and the keynote
speaker, Ms Vicki Hollet. The dinner was also attended by other
senior officials from the Ministry of Education, sponsors, paper
presenters and committee members of the conference.
In his welcoming remarks,
Director of Institute Technology Brunei, Awang Hj Yusra bin Hj
Abdul Halim, praised the keynote speaker for making everyone at
the conference aware that communication was not only a tool for
information but also a tool for fostering good interpersonal
relationships.
He noted that tertiary
institutions, like Institute Technology Brunei, were attempting
to make students responsible for the development of their own
language skills and that self accessed materials are seen as
part of the endeavour.
ICT, he added, will no doubt
play a vital role in the English language programmes of
tomorrow. A recent survey suggested that Brunei Darussalam has
all the ingredients to be the centre for English teaching in the
region.
