The social abuse of cyberspace
among school children which carries certain consequences were
discussed by a group of school principals and teachers, UBD
lecturers and members of the local business community.
The discussion was held at the
Computer Centre of UBD yesterday by the Thursday Club which
comprises UBD staff and lecturers who usually hold a discussion
on a certain topic of interest twice a month on Thurs-days.
Dr S. A. Shahab, a UBD lecturer
of critical and creative thinking, was the facilitator for the
Thursday Club. He is also a California-trained psychotherapist.
Among the issues discussed were
addiction to cyperspace among housewives or husbands.
It was observed and had
happened in the past in other countries that the initial
harmless chatting and communicating with a certain individual on
the net can lead to a more intimate and meaningful relationship
later on and be the cause for marital infidelity or even
divorce.
The question raised was, is it
lawful for Muslims to allow such relationship to occur in the
initial stage or later on or neither?
More serious abuses such as the
invasion of one's privacy and confidentality were also raised at
the discussion.
