The Foochow Association Chairman, Mr Tan Tei Tei (4th left), presents a book of the history of the association to the ambassador.

The Ambassador of the Peoples Republic of China, Mr Wei Wei and his wife, visited the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and other Chinese associations in Kuala Belait yesterday morning with the aim of establishing formal connection with the local Chinese community.

Hosting the visit was the President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Pehin Onn Siew Siong.

Mr Wei Wei visited Kuala Belait for the first time and he was impressed by the friendliness of the people in the district.

The ambassador, who had been in Brunei for less than four weeks since his appointment, added that he wished to learn more of the Malay culture in Brunei Darussalam.

He also noted that the purpose of his visit was to provide information on the fast growing economy in China and the good opportunity to establish economic or business ties with the local Chinese.

The ambassador also touched on the close relationship between Brunei and China due to frequent exchange visits made by the President of China and His Majesty.

Yesterday, the Chinese ambassador visited the Chinese Chamber of Commerce Association, Hakka Association, Foochow Association, Tai Poo Association, Kwang Hui Sau Association and Hainan Association in Kuala Belait.

He also made few visits to the Chinese associations in Bandar Seri Begawan.
