Immigration Offenders Jailed

Bandar Seri Begawan - Niran Yotkham, 47, from Thailand was sentenced to 6 months in jail after he pleaded guilty to remaining unlawfully after the expiry date of his unemployment pass.

The Immigration Prosecutor Reduan Hj Adnan told the court that Niran was arrested at the workers quarters near the Supa Save building two days ago during a raid conducted by the Immigration officers.

Niran admitted to being a runaway worker and thus had remained in the country unlawfully for a period of three years and 25 days.

In a separate case, Vellaichamy Balamurugan from India was also sentenced to imprisonment for a month after pleading guilty to the same offence.

The Immigration Prosecutor told the court that the 34-year-old carpenter was caught at No 184 in Kg Delima Satu where he was arrested at the said place on suspicion of being and illegal immigrant.

He admitted to being a runaway worker and had remained in the country unlawfully for a period of 68 days. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
