The Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP), Brunei LNG Sdn
Bhd (BLNG), Brunei Shell Marketing Company Sdn Bhd (BSM) and
Brunei Shell Tankers Sdn Bhd (BST) have jointly sponsored the
10th Asean Otorhinolaryngology (ORL) Head and Neck Surgery
Congress.
This biennial congress will be
participated by representatives from the ten Asean member
countries and is scheduled to take place from January 27th to
29th at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.
Haji Zainal Abidin Hj Mohd Ali,
Deputy Managing Director of BSP cum Human Resources and External
Affairs Director will be presenting the cheque worth $75,000 on
behalf of the four joint-venture companies on Thursday, January
23rd at ICC as part of BSP's overall contribution to health care
in Brunei.
On hand to receive the cheque
will be Pehin Orang Kaya Putera Maharaja Dato Seri Laila Jasa
Haji Awang Abu Bakar Haji Apong, the Minister of Health.
BSP will take part in the
Occupation- related Disorders symposium which will be chaired by
Dr Andrew Benc, Chief Medical Officer at Panaga Hospital on the
first day of the Congress.
In this session, discussions
will focus on diseases that affect ear, nose and throat in
relation to occupations for example noise-induced hearing loss.
There will be three
international speakers at this session and participants will
include 15 staff from Panaga Hospital.
This will be the first time for
Brunei Darussalam to host such a congress which centred on
discussions of recent advances, service provision and education.
In addition, there will be an
in-depth focus on regional needs, cooperation and practice
regarding ORL Head and Neck Surgery in line with the chosen
theme "Otorhinolaryngology: Promoting and Strengthening
Regional Partnership."
In conjunction with the
Congress sessions, BSP will also be participating in an
Exhibition featuring the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC).
The Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) Exhibition Booth will
display the main activities that took place in OGDC since its
opening in September last year such as the official opening by
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam
and the recent Hari Raya gathering with Her Majesty Raja Isteri
Pengiran Anak Saleha.
The Congress will be officiated
by the Minister of Health on Monday, January 27th, 2003 and is
to be followed by plenary sessions, symposia, instructional
sessions and panel discussions.
There will be 10 plenary
sessions and proposed topics include Advances in Nasopharyngeal
Cancer, Current Status of Implant Otology, Sleep Medicine,
Rhinology, Paediatric Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
and Evidence Based Medicine.
One of the congress highlights
will be the innovative session named eORL, a session that
illustrates the increasing use of information technology (IT) in
ORL specifically and health care in general.
