Con Doctors From China Strike
Bruneian Women
By Ignatius Stephen
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A group of visiting Chinese "doctors" are
terrorizing the elderly in the Brunei capital.
Some of these old folks have had
their heart racing alarmingly fast, or their blood pressure shooting
up to dangerous levels. Worse still are the cases of blood sugar of
aged diabetic victims reaching precariously high after
"treatment."
Operating in twos and threes and
armed with packets of small rolled up candy like dark brown "cure
all" pills these "doctors" from China go house calling
targeting elderly Chinese women in the Brunei capital.
They pick up a time when others are
away at work and then convince the elderly women that their pills can
work wonders.
Because they are from China and as
the older people still look towards that county with some reverence
the conmen doctors flashing impressive business cards from
non-existent hospitals find it easy to convince the old folks.
Believing in the bogus pills
absolutely some trusting souls totally abstained from their hospital
and clinic prescriptions landing them in difficulties.
"My aunt had her sugar levels
reaching to dangerous levels. We did not know what was happening. It
was only later that we found out that the she had been conned by the
Chinese doctors," said a young office executive who wished not to
be named.
She said that she is enlisting the
assistance of the press so that others will not fall for the trick.
She plans to lodge a report to the Chinese Embassy.
The conmen's calls are apparently
proving a thriving business. They are singling out housing estates.
"They were so respectable
looking and extremely convincing. I had no doubt at all that they were
from a famous hospital as they claimed from China," said an
elderly victim.
"But my son now tells be the
pills could be harmful or at best just sugar candies," she added.
The pills come in plastic packets
depicting the sketch of a Chinese scholar and claims to cure all
ailments under the sun.
