Young men at work.

His Majesty's call to the
people, particularly the youths, to venture into small and
medium enterprises to beat the downturn is starting to bear
fruit.
Small and medium enterprises or
SMEs may look simple but the business requires commitment and
hardwork. SMEs are mushrooming across the country due to the
support of the authorities and the efforts of individuals in
such ventures.
For example, the Bulletin has
noticed two "drive through" take-away food outlets in
Kampong Telanai.
One outlet sells mainly
chicken, which is sourced from local suppliers and thus plays a
role in supporting the poultry industry. The other outlet sells
tea break food such as cakoi kawin, roti john, kebab, nasi lemak,
grilled ayam and other popular Bruneian delicacies.
The Bulletin had the
opportunity to interview one of these enterprising people, Awang
Rudy, as he was busy preparing the take-away food. He is doing
the job while waiting for his 'O' level results.
Previously, they were stationed
in Kiarong and they have been operating at the new site for four
days.
He added that this line of
business is an example of an SME, which encourages more people
to be involved in business and to be independent.
The drive through food outlets
are new to the country but already are gaining popularity. Many
customers can be seen flocking to such places to buy the food.
They are convenient as customers can park their cars at the side
of the road while waiting for the food.
Perhaps, more school leavers or
graduates, many of whom have high expectations of landing a
government job, should take the cue from these enterprising
youths.
They could consider starting
their own small business too.
