Lion Dance is one of the most
anticipated events during the Chinese New Year. With drums,
gongs and cymbals in the background, the dance is believed by
the Chinese to dispel evil and bring in good luck. Usually
performed in pairs, the 'head dancer' brings the lion to life by
controlling the batting of eyelids, mouth and ears. In
preparation for the upcoming Chinese New Year celebration,
students of Chung Hwa School have been rehearsing the lion dance
programme since last November. "Martial arts are not
pre-requisites when it comes to lion dancing, so long as one is
interested," said Biau, the captain of the troupe. "We
need parents' consent though as injuries can occur especially
during the 'dancing on the stands' sequences."
